Bone Marrow Transplant
A bone marrow transplant is a health process involving healthy stem cells transplanting into a patient’s bone marrow to replace damaged or diseased marrow with healthy ones. These stem cells grow into new blood cells, including red, white, and platelets.
Bone marrow is a soft, spongy tissue found inside certain bones, such as the hipbones and the sternum (breastbone). It is responsible for producing various types of blood cells that play critical roles in the body’s immune system, oxygen transport, and blood clotting.
Bone Marrow Transplants Treat Various Conditions
Cancers
Cancers like leukaemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma are treated with bone marrow transplants as opposed to chemotherapy or radiation therapy, which kills malignant cells but damages good bone marrow. These transplants increase the creation of healthy blood cells.
Blood Disorders
Sickle cell anaemia, thalassemia, and immune system illnesses like SCID or autoimmune diseases are all treated by bone marrow transplants.
Types of bone marrow transplants:
Autologous Transplant
In this type of transplant, the patient’s own healthy bone marrow or stem cells are collected and stored before undergoing high-dose chemotherapy or radiation. After the cancer treatment, the stored stem cells are reintroduced back into the patient’s bloodstream to repopulate the bone marrow.
Allogeneic Transplant
In an allogeneic transplant, the healthy stem cells are obtained from a compatible donor, typically a sibling or an unrelated donor with a similar tissue type. The donated stem cells are then infused into the patient’s bloodstream to replace the damaged bone marrow.
Bone marrow transplantation is a complex procedure that requires careful matching of donors and recipients and involves significant preparation and follow-up care. It is typically performed in specialized medical centers by a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals, including hematologists, oncologists, and transplant specialists.
